她曾只是一个生活在维多利亚时代的英国小女孩。那时的她无法上学，无法像自己的哥哥们那样跑到外面，而只能在家，随着自己的家庭女教师进行学习。她害羞，不多话，在光鲜热闹的世界面前也许显得安静，但她的那本秘密日记却泄露了她的心灵，那是一颗敏感鲜活的属于艺术家的心灵。
她的天性使她对周边的事物永远保持着浓厚的兴趣。早期的素描显示出她很早就注意观察身边的事物。她和哥哥一起饲养了很多小动物，老鼠、小鸟、蜥蜴、蛇…这些可爱的宠物们成为她素描和绘画的对象，为日后创作彼得兔的故事奠定了一定的基础。除此之外，她还创作了许多副精致优美的乡村风景图，足见她对于乡村生活的热爱。
大约是1893年的时候，波特小姐完成了绘本《彼得兔的故事》（The Tale of Peter Rabbit），她想要送给相识的病了很久的小男孩。而在1901年的时候她又私印了250本作为圣诞节礼物，这批书很快就以一先令的价格脱销，她不得不在两星期后又追印了200本。再之后的，就像大家知道的那样，出版社购买了Peter Rabbit的版权，于全球发行。
